Studying the history of Chicago gives us an idea of the root causes of the violence that plagues many of our predominantly black communities. The rampant discrimination in hiring, redlining, the war on drugs and mass incarceration to name a few, has severely crippled many communities. It is believed by many that knowing one’s heritage and increasing economic opportunities actually improves self-esteem and race esteem while decreasing crime & violence.

This workshop series will do just that. It will increase workshop participant’s knowledge of their heritage/history while increasing their financial literacy and desire to improve their economic condition. From July through October 31, 2018, the participants will be introduced to the works of Dr. Boyce Watkins via youtube, his social media platform Blaggenuf and his online school “The Black Business School”. Dr. Watkins who received his Ph.D. in Finance from Ohio State University will introduce us to concepts like cooperative economics, how to buy a stock, real estate and the basics of money. The Workshop and subsequent study group sessions will be facilitated by Cynthia Clark of CynthiaClarkBookClub.com and Deborah White of Women’s Advocacy Resources.

Facilitators will guide participants including parent/child participants on a path of “let’s get paid, student for life” activities. Students that excel and/or really take an interest in Dr. Watkin’s curriculum may be eligible for a 2-month scholarship in The Black Business School’s online courses for young people entitled “Black Millionaires of Tomorrow”.

Scholarships available by AWOFINC for selected students paid through the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities.
