The Open Horizons Youth Sailing Program, which will target low-income, minority, at-risk children and youth ages 8-18, will teach leadership, teamwork and conflict resolution skills through sailing. The program will run from June to August and will consist of five sessions of two weeks each:

  • Session 1: June 18-29
  • Session 2: July 2-13
  • Session 3: July 16-27
  • Session 4: July 30-August 10
  • Session 5: August 13-24

Classes will be held Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.  Instruction will take place in Jackson Park Outer Harbor in Lake Michigan and will include both classroom and hands-on on-the-water activities.  The program will be overseen by our Sailing Program Director Classes and a staff of instructors all of whom will be US Sailing Certified instructors (Level 1 and Reach/STEM certification).

JPYC Commodore Karen Harris stated “We are pleased to offer free scholarships to youth to participate in this sailing program.  By teaching youth to sail we literally hope to open their horizons and help them to navigate a new course in their lives.”
